Design options for more efficient P25 system coverage

Network design that includes coverage reliability as one of its core objectives means that Public Safety first responders can confidently travel within the network area and communicate clearly, at any time and any place without fear of coverage dead spots.

Typically, Public Safety agencies specify a service area reliability of 97%, although this may be as high as 99.9999%, depending on the application. Tait coverage experts utilize a range of tools and approaches to calculate optimum network design to deliver the necessary coverage needed.

Systems Engineers have at their disposal three approaches to predict, measure and improve coverage performance and reliability:

  • Simulcast systems; designed to transmit on the same frequency from overlapping sites to ensure call continuity and clarity as users move around
  • Macro Diversity; balancing and optimizing the use of uplink and downlink transmission
  • Micro Diversity; optimized use of receive antennas whilst the system selects the strongest signal and maximizes the signal to noise ratio to the receiver
